A roller rink converted to ice by hockey parents in the 1980s

Iceland Family Skating Center in Virginia Beach was a roller skating rink, and before that a storage building, until a group of hockey-enthusiast parents converted it to ice in the 1980s. Rink lore holds that five families put up their houses to get the mortgage that paid for the conversion. Most of those parents were founders of the Hampton Roads Youth Hockey Association, the original youth hockey organization in Hampton Roads, which had formed to find a facility for their children.

The building's earlier lives are still underfoot: during a 2026 remodel the operators found two asphalt floors beneath the ice surface. Today the Hampton Roads Youth Hockey Association's Junior Admirals call Iceland home. The rink is also home of the Warriors, the Warrior for Life Fund's hockey program, which fields a Warriors Sled Hockey Program alongside travel and tournament hockey and holds a morning pickup at Iceland on Mondays and Fridays.

In January 1997 Iceland was the only permanent ice rink operating in South Hampton Roads, normally booked from early morning until midnight Monday through Thursday and for even longer hours on weekends. Mary Hutchinson, the general manager at the time, said the skating school grew every year.
