A volunteer-run rink on Midway's Town Square

The Midway Ice Rink began in 2000, when City Councilman Bob Simonsen proposed a natural ice rink on the Town Square in the shade of the nearby pine trees. Midway City provided plywood dasher boards and some used equipment and skates, and skaters left donations in a box by the door.

Because the natural ice season was short, the City Council pursued refrigerated options and approved the construction of the current rink. A National Hockey Players Association grant paid most of the cost of the dasher boards, the City was given four refrigeration units from the 2002 Olympics (only one was needed), and two used trailers bought at a significant discount from the Olympic Committee have long served as the rink's warming hut. The rink is estimated to have cost less than half of a commercially built one.

Since the fall of 2017 the rink has been run by the Midway Ice Rink Committee, formed when citizens realized the city would not be opening it. The committee is an entity of the Midway Boosters, the operating arm of Swiss Days. The City says the rink is open from Thanksgiving weekend through March 15th, weather permitting.
