Kokomo's real-ice rink inside the ballpark
The Frozen Sandlot puts a 60-by-90-foot rink of real ice, unlike temporary rinks made of artificial or synthetic ice-like materials, inside Kokomo Municipal Stadium each winter. The rink sits close to the backstop so spectators and non-skaters can watch from the stadium seats, and the City says adding an amenity like ice skating makes the most of the stadium year round.
Bridges Outreach hosts and manages the rink in partnership with the City of Kokomo. The nonprofit works alongside youth in the community and mentors and tutors over 700 students a year. Thanks to the City, 100% of proceeds go back to Bridges Outreach, and the rink is integrated with its job training program, employing Bridges students and families.
The partnership is meant to give people a fun, family-friendly activity to do in the winter.
