A rink the community raised and built
Aviemore Ice Rink began as a community campaign: in February 2021 the Aviemore and Glenmore Community Trust launched Aviemore Community Ice to raise funds for an ice rink and a marquee to house it. More than 30 volunteers, including members of the Strathdearn Moorland Group, built the rink within three weeks.
It opened for public skating on 9 October 2021 and welcomed over 22,000 skaters in its first year. The ice sits inside a large marquee with an alpine theme, on a site whose use the Macdonald Aviemore Resort donated, and the rink created eight jobs. Funders included the Cairngorms National Park Authority, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Fat Face Foundation.
The trust owns and operates the rink. Its community programmes include junior and adult Learn to Skate, under-18 and adult beginner ice hockey sessions and adult scrimmage hockey.
