One NHL-size rink and a half sheet in 41,870 square feet; Black Bear's ninth New Jersey rink
Howell Ice Arena in Farmingdale, New Jersey, is a 41,870-square-foot building with one NHL-size rink and a half-sheet rink beside it. It has belonged to Black Bear Sports Group since March 2021, when the company bought it as its ninth ice rink in New Jersey.
Black Bear, founded by CEO Murry Gunty in 2015 and the largest owner and operator of ice rinks in the United States, took the arena on with a plan to run it alongside its three-rink Jersey Shore Arena five miles away. Howell is the home of the Jersey Shore Wildcats, and at the time of the sale more than 500 local youth and high school hockey players used it as their home ice. The building runs hockey and skate programs, public skating, drop-ins and leagues.
Figure skating and hockey were already established when Black Bear arrived. Vice president Ryan Scott said the company intended to build on that base and bring more tournaments and competitions to the area, starting with AHF showcases the following season.
