Two NHL-size rinks from 2002, closed by an ice plant failure in 2025 and reopened under Black Bear in 2026
The building opened in 2002 as Kalamazoo Wings West, a 41,200-square-foot facility housing two NHL-sized ice rinks. In September 2025 a refrigeration system failure forced it to close its doors, and its owners at the time, Greenleaf Hospitality Group, announced that Wings West would permanently close because of the ice plant failure.
Black Bear Sports Group, a privately held, Chevy Chase, Maryland-based company that operates sports and entertainment facilities and youth sports events, bought the Kalamazoo County facility in October 2025 for $3.5 million and over the following year put more than $2 million into getting it operable again. Since incorporating in 2015 the company has purchased 47 rinks across 11 states, nine of them in Michigan.
The renovated rink officially reopened on Saturday, August 22, 2026, under a new name. A partnership with Michigan staple BIGGBY COFFEE relaunched Wings West as BIGGBY COFFEE Ice Cube - Kalamazoo ahead of the 2026-27 season. Its operator counts it as one of Michigan's most heavily visited venues, with over 1,000,000 in foot traffic annually.
