Two NHL sheets in Byron Center, home to Fox Motors Hockey Club, Aquinas College and two high school teams
Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center, in western Michigan, has two NHL-size sheets of ice under one roof and a capacity of 1,000. The Grand Rapids Owls once played their home games in the building, in the years when it was called the Southside Community Ice Center.
Hockey fills most of the ice today. The arena is home to Fox Motors Hockey Club and is the home rink of the Byron Center Bulldogs and Grand Rapids Catholic Central high school teams. Aquinas College's men's and women's teams have used Southside as their home facility since the programs started competing in 2015, and TPH Center of Excellence also trains here. Figure skating has a place in the building through the Lake Effect Figure Skating Club, whose membership is the way into the arena's Youth Aspire program.
Every February, Southside and Fox Motors Hockey Club hold Hockey Fights Cancer, an annual fundraiser run with the Van Andel Institute Purple Community.
