A downtown plaza designed by Maya Lin that becomes a city-run ice rink each winter
Currently out of season The City's page still shows last season's holiday sessions (24 December 2025 to 1 January 2026); the 2026/27 opening date and hours are not announced yet. Checked on 4 October 2026. Official schedule update
Rosa Parks Circle is a downtown Grand Rapids plaza that is converted into an ice rink each winter. Maya Lin designed the plaza, and below the ice 166 fiber optic lights are laid out to represent the sky of Michigan as it appeared at midnight on January 1, 2000.
The city's Department of Parks and Recreation owns and operates the rink. Every year the city turns a portion of the Circle over to skating, part of what local radio called creating affordable ice skating for everyone. The rink is fully staffed and family-friendly.
The rink is an outdoor ice surface, which makes irregularities and defects more common than on indoor ice, and it closes briefly between skate sessions to allow for resurfacing.
