Kelso's curling rink, open since 1 October 1964
Border Ice Rink in Kelso opened on 1 October 1964, a two-storey harled building with separate entrances for curling and skating and the rink in a lower shed-like structure at the rear. The ice is a single sheet marked out as a four-sheet curling rink, so curling, ice hockey matches and public skating take turns on it. In summer the floor is used for roller-skating and pickleball.
Curling dominates. The rink plays host to almost 400 curlers and dozens of skaters, 24 curling clubs use it for practice and tournaments, and it has produced international players including 2007 senior world champions Keith Prentice and Tommy Fleming.
Keeping the ice frozen has been the challenge. Refrigeration units dating from the mid-1980s broke down often enough to delay the 2022 curling season by two weeks. After several years of losses, during which closure was considered, the Border Ice Rink Trust took over management in August 2024 and installed a 100kWp solar array with battery storage in December 2025.
