The Edgewater’s lakeside plaza converts to a skating rink each winter
Currently out of season The Edgewater Ice Rink closed for the 2025-26 season on February 13, 2026 because of warm weather. The 2026-27 opening date has not been posted; last season it opened on December 10. Official schedule update
The Edgewater Ice Rink takes over The Plaza, almost an acre of space between The Langdon Building and the Wisconsin Building on the shores of Lake Mendota. The plaza is open to the public with regularly scheduled outdoor events and concerts, and converts to a skating rink in the winter months.
The Edgewater first opened its doors in 1948 and quickly became a prominent part of the Madison community and culture. The restored property keeps the classic façade of that historic 1948 building, now called The Langdon Building, beside a new tower, The Wisconsin Building. The renovation opened in September 2014.
Chairs sit around the rink, with warming areas, heaters and fire pits nearby. The rink closes when the air temperature is 0°F or below or the wind chill is -10°F or below, regardless of air temperature.
