Built for Badgers hockey in 1960

Hartmeyer Ice Arena was built in 1960 by Fenton Kelsey Jr., a Madison business owner and hockey supporter, to house the Wisconsin Badgers men's team. The Badgers stayed only four years before moving to the Dane County Coliseum. The building then hosted the WIAA state championship tournament in 1972, 1973 and 1979, and from 1984 to 1995 it was home to the first Capitols, a United States Hockey League junior team.

The arena is a 3,500-seat building; a concrete-based sheet installed in 2008 made it usable year round. Madison Patriots Youth Hockey has used the rink since 1984 and includes the Madison Dragons, an all-girls program. Monona Grove High School has its home ice here, the Madison Eastside Lakers co-op has played here since 2006, and the Figure Skating Club of Madison skates out of the building alongside two adult leagues and an adaptive hockey and skating program.

The City of Madison sold Hartmeyer in 2004 to Madison Ice Inc., the nonprofit that also owns Madison Ice Arena. In January 2025 the City Council voted to relieve that nonprofit of its city debt and split the two arenas' operation; the East Madison Ice Collective, formed by user groups including the Patriots and the skating club, is taking over Hartmeyer with $3 million in repairs to raise over three years.
