Opened November 1, 2010 as the Waunakee DeForest Ice Rink
The Ice Pond at Waunakee opened as the Waunakee DeForest Ice Rink with a ribbon cutting on November 1, 2010, nearly six years after a fund was set up to study building a rink. The building had its tenants from the first week: Wildcat Youth Hockey's Mites, Squirts and Pee Wees, the Waunakee and DeForest boys' teams and the Capital Cougars girls' team all moved their practices onto home ice, and Waunakee gained a place to host hockey tournaments and figure skating shows.
The building shares its design with the ice arena in Oregon, Wisconsin, and was built with an ammonia rather than freon cooling system. Locker rooms were built for each of the three high school teams, with four more for youth teams, and the rink was wired for sound, with a disco ball and lighting. Open skating for all ages was part of the plan from the start.
Today the Wildcat Youth Hockey Association, which draws boys and girls from Waunakee, DeForest, Lodi, Poynette and surrounding communities, plays most of its practices and home games here, and Waunakee high school hockey still calls the Ice Pond its rink. A planned Skills Suite on the mezzanine would add a multi-use gymnasium, two shooting and passing rooms and storage for the association.
