Sun Prairie's nonprofit two-rink arena, opened January 2014 with boards from the Calgary Flames' Saddledome.
The Sun Prairie Ice Arena opened on January 17, 2014, a $7.2 million two-sheet building that grew out of a volunteer campaign backed by the Sun Prairie Youth Hockey Association and area businesses. It replaced the previous ice arena, which had served Sun Prairie skaters for more than three decades and was leveled. The city donated park land, the whole build took six months, and volunteers did the painting, pipe laying and landscaping themselves.
The 91,000-square-foot arena is owned and operated by Sun Prairie Ice, Inc., a nonprofit. It has two NHL-size rinks, the Cardinal Rink seating 1,100 and the Tom & Rita Tubbs Rink seating 600, plus mezzanine seating, standing-room viewing platforms and ice-level viewing in both. The dasher boards on Rink A came from the NHL's Calgary Flames and were used inside the Saddledome.
The Sun Prairie high school hockey team, a joint team of Sun Prairie East and West, plays its games here, with boys and girls varsity locker rooms in the building. Rage Women's Hockey leases a locker room of its own, adults play in the Old Buzzard Hockey League, and the arena hosts many hockey tournaments through the season.
