West Bend's youth-hockey-owned rink: from Big Cedar Lake in 1975 to an indoor arena after the Ice '92 drive.
The Kettle Moraine Ice Center exists because of the Washington County Youth Hockey Association, formed in 1975. Its first practice was on Big Cedar Lake; the rink then moved to Little Cedar Lake, to a pond at Silverbrook Drive and Hickory Street, and onto a ball diamond at Regner Park, before flooding pushed it behind the Regner Park warming house in 1977. The Ice '92 fundraising campaign finally paid for an indoor home.
The association's families still own and run the building as a volunteer non-profit. The single rink seats about 1,500 spectators and has a second-floor enclosed viewing area; a 2010 expansion more than doubled the non-ice space, adding five locker rooms, a fitness center, new upper and lower lobbies and a shooting room.
Besides the youth association, the ice is home to West Bend Power of the NA3HL, the Kettle Moraine Figure Skating Club and the Ice Bears high school co-op, and the Washington County Adult Hockey League plays here. The rink closes each year from May 1 to mid-June.
