Opened in 1977 as the Donald W. Peterson Arena; a second sheet followed in 2001
The Buffalo Civic Center began as the Donald W. Peterson Arena, which opened on November 18, 1977. Donald Peterson mortgaged his land and home to buy the steel building, then found a Zamboni on Long Island and boards and a cooling plant in St. Louis. A December 4, 1977 dedication renamed the arena in his honor.
A second sheet opened on December 8, 2001, added to the east side of the building. The Buffalo varsity team christened it with a 6-1 win over Minnetonka, and both surfaces measure 200 by 85 feet. Earlier that year the first Buffalo Hockey Hall of Fame class had honored ten of the original Buffalo hockey pioneers.
The City of Buffalo's Parks and Recreation Department runs the year-round building, which has two indoor regulation-size sheets plus an outdoor pleasure rink and an outdoor hockey rink behind it. The Buffalo Bison boys' and girls' high school teams, Buffalo Youth Hockey Association and the Buffalo Figure Skating Club call it home.
