Farmington's 1976 arena, named for two hockey founders

Schmitz-Maki Arena opened in 1976 as the Farmington Civic Arena, a one-sheet barn with bleacher seating for 1,000. Outwardly it shares its design with the Brainerd Civic Arena, which opened a year later. The arena was dedicated in 2005 in honor of two founders of Farmington hockey, Louie Schmitz and Alfred Maki.

Louie Schmitz moved from Red Lake Falls in 1954 and is credited with starting boys' youth hockey in town and with helping develop girls' hockey in Minnesota in the early 1970s; the girls' holiday tournament still carries his name. Alfred Maki came from Warroad in 1959 to become Farmington's first high school boys' hockey coach.

The City of Farmington owns and runs the arena, which is open year-round with ice, off-season turf and dry-floor events. The Farmington Tigers boys' and girls' programs and the Tri-County Heritage Figure Skating club are the home teams, and summer ice is available from mid-June through mid-September.
