WVU Hockey's home ice since 2025

The Hope Gas Ice Pavilion opened on September 2, 2025, on the Mylan Park campus, which the Mylan Park Foundation has developed on reclaimed mine land since 1999. Hope Gas and the Hazel Ruby McQuain Charitable Trust backed its construction, and a large crowd watched the first puck drop at the grand opening and naming reveal six days later. Before it opened, West Virginia University's hockey teams drove out of town to practice, and the outdoor rink built for them in 1979 presented challenges on game days.

The 48,000-square-foot building has one NHL-regulation sheet, seating for 1,200 spectators and eight locker rooms. It is home ice for WVU Hockey, whose club teams are based here, and for the Morgantown Hockey Association, and the WVU Figure Skating Club skates here too. Its programming also covers curling, school programs and summer camps.

WVU Hockey drew 137 players to tryouts in the building's first season, enough for a team it had not planned that July. At the opening, Mylan Park's executive director pointed to the stands and said the community's next job is to build a second sheet of ice.
