Morgantown's first ice rink, opened in 1979 and rebuilt in 2025
Morgantown's ice rink in White Park opened in 1979 as the city's first. Skaters had tried a trout pond and flooded tennis courts that froze only a few days a year, until a campaign that began in 1971 led city voters to approve a special levy that paid for a pool and later the rink. Planning started in 1978, with the grand opening and dedication in 1979.
With the new rink the high school team emerged, and the WVU hockey team, which had been traveling to Pennsylvania to practice and play, started playing here. Don Spencer organized and coached the first Morgantown high school team, and the Morgantown Hockey Association called the arena home for over 40 years.
In 2025 the nearly 50-year-old arena was renovated, with a new roof, new electrical and plumbing systems, a rebuilt concourse and new boards, bleachers and glass, and the BOPARC Sports Complex reopened it in October 2025. Morgantown Hockey Association and WVU Club Hockey moved to the new Hope Gas Ice Pavilion at Mylan Park, which opened September 8, 2025.
