Heron Park Outdoor Rink is one of Ottawa's community-maintained rinks: the city pays an individual or a group to build and maintain rinks on city property, delivers the boards and puts them up, and from there the ice is up to the volunteers. In the 2021-22 season the city was paying the Heron Park rink volunteers to build the rink and have someone on site for a set number of hours. The City of Ottawa lists the site as a rink with puddle, with seasonal boards and seasonal lights.
The rink sits below the park fieldhouse, which has an indoor, heated change room where skaters leave their boots, and the stairs down to the ice can be difficult to manage in skates. In 2022 the volunteers were running rink attendants eight shifts a week, two on Saturday and one every other day, and said skaters come from other parts of the city for the quality of the ice.
Every February the community association puts on a family-friendly Winter Carnival, with a pick-up broomball game on the rink, equipment provided, and a homemade lunch served inside the community centre. A mid-winter warm-up can close the rink for a period of time.
