The Pacific Sea Devils' home rink in Langford, built to reuse all of its waste heat
Westhills Arena is the 400-seat, NHL-sized ice rink at City Centre Park in Langford. It is the home of the Pacific Sea Devils and the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy, and the arena calls itself the heart of year-round skating in Langford.
The building was put up in partnership with Accent Refrigeration and designed around energy recovery. All of its waste heat is captured and reused, and it is described as the first rink in Canada designed to share reclaimed heat with the surrounding community. A Mycom 2M compressor runs the refrigeration, a geothermal field beneath the building stores energy for heating and cooling, and a dehumidifier driven by waste heat is billed as a first in North America.
In the winter season, skaters can leave the arena along an ice river to an outdoor skating pond at the park.
