Yost began as the largest indoor building on any US campus and has had ice since 1973
Yost was built in 1923 as the Yost Field House, the largest indoor building of its kind on any campus in the United States, and was dedicated on November 10, 1923. It was named in honor of Fielding Harris Yost, legendary coach of Michigan's football teams, and it was home to Michigan's great track teams of the 1950s and the Cazzie Russell-led basketball teams of the mid-1960s.
A renovation converted it to an ice arena in 1973, and the first ice hockey game was played on November 2, 1973. It has since been home to Michigan hockey, the men's and women's club teams, the synchronized skating club team, area high school teams, recreational leagues, the intramural hockey and broomball leagues and a variety of other community and university ice programs.
A major renovation came in the summer of 1996, and a 294-seat club level balcony and lounge was added perched above the east side stands. The 2012 renovation essentially gutted the facility while restoring the windows throughout. In 2017 the regents approved naming the ice rink the Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena.
