Part of the Cadet Field House since 1968, with 2,217 seats at more than 6,600 feet above sea level
The Cadet Ice Arena was built as part of the Cadet Field House at the Air Force Academy and first used on May 4, 1968, when Olympic gold medalist Peggy Fleming skated at the dedication. The first game on the ice was an 8-6 win over the Colorado All-Stars, an exhibition on November 29, 1968. The first intercollegiate game, an 8-1 loss to Notre Dame, followed in December.
The arena holds 2,217 spectators at more than 6,600 feet above sea level. Its surface, refrigeration system, boards and glass were replaced in September 2000, and before the 2019-20 season it received new lights, a new locker room, coaches' offices and equipment and medical areas. On September 16, 2007 the Colorado Avalanche played their Burgundy-White game here, the arena's first professional game.
Air Force hockey calls it home; the Falcons were the first service academy team to earn an NCAA bid. Murals at the south end of the arena honor six of the Academy's best-ever hockey players.
