Two NHL-size sheets in Arvada since fall 2000

Apex Center Ice Arena opened in the fall of 2000 as part of Apex Center, the Arvada recreation complex run by Apex Park and Recreation District, a special district founded on November 13, 1956. The ice arena shares the building with a pool and water recreation area, three gymnasiums and a climbing wall.

There are two indoor rinks, each with an 85-by-200-foot ice surface, and both are resurfaced by electric Zambonis. On the lower level a central spine of ten locker rooms sits between the two sheets and opens directly onto the ice. Spectator seating above the rinks holds 800 in the west rink and 250 in the east rink.

Arvada Hockey Association has been the home club since the building opened. AHA started in 1969 at the now-closed North Jeffco Ice Arena, a single sheet of ice, and moved to Apex when the two-sheet facility opened. The association plays its home games, practices and tournaments here and now fields almost 600 players on more than 20 teams. The district runs its own figure skating program, Learn to Skate lessons, stick and puck sessions and learn-to-play hockey for youth and adults on the same ice.
