The Ritchie Center's community ice arena, where the Denver Pioneers practice and the public skates.
Joy Burns Arena is the University of Denver's community ice arena, one of the two ice arenas in the Daniel L. Ritchie Center, which opened in 1999 with a natatorium, a fitness center and other athletics amenities. It carries the name of Joy Burns, a longtime trustee who joined the board in 1981 and was the first woman to lead it; her name is also on a plaza in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts.
The sheet is the practice facility of the Denver Pioneers hockey team, and public skaters are invited to share it with DU's championship-winning teams. The arena also houses DU's Learn to Skate lessons for children and adults ages 3 and above, Learn to Play Hockey, Jr. Pioneers Hockey and an adult hockey program, and DU bills itself as Hockey Capital USA.
A 2022 estate gift from Joy Burns is being used for renovations at the arena. At stick & puck, multiple nets are set out on half of the ice while the other half is reserved for private lessons.
