Jackson's rink, donated to the Optimist Club's charity in 1985 and doubled by its Twice the Ice project.
Optimist Ice Arena began as the Jackson Sports Arena, which its owners donated in August 1985 to the Jackson Optimist Charitable Fund. A seven-member board from the Optimist Club of Jackson, a charter member of Optimist International since July 1940, governs the rink.
In July 1996, facing heavy demand for ice, the board took on the Twice the Ice project, which more than doubled the building with a second, year-round ice surface and a larger lobby, office and concessions. More than half a million skaters, guests and fans come through the arena on West North Street each year.
It is home to the Jackson Hockey Association's recreational and competitive youth hockey, and its programs also include figure skating, learn to skate, adult hockey and curling.
