The Civic Center rinks, built in 1976
Southgate Arena is the ice side of the Southgate Civic Center, built in 1976 along with the city's police, fire and court buildings when staff moved out of the old Northline facilities. The Civic Center has since been expanded, and the city's Parks & Recreation Department runs the arena today as part of a municipal complex that also holds nine ball fields, a golf course and an outdoor inline rink. The city's own history counts the community ice and hockey rinks with the baseball diamonds and the 18-hole municipal golf course among its recreation assets.
Inside are two indoor ice rinks, and in the off season the floors are booked for dry-floor events. Figure skating is the resident program: the Civic Center hosts the Southgate Figure Skating Club, which takes members of all ages and levels.
The club sets much of the arena's calendar. It hosts a US Figure Skating basic skills competition each October and an ISI freestyle competition each February, and stages an annual ice show in April.
