Westland's one-sheet city rink, renamed in 2003 for NHL star Mike Modano
The Mike Modano Ice Arena is the City of Westland's rink on North Wildwood. In 2003 Westland, where Modano lived during his minor hockey career, renamed its ice rink after him. The building has one NHL regulation-size ice surface and four professional-style locker rooms, and its ice season runs from September through the first week of May.
The city has put more than $1.7 million into the arena, adding LED lights above the ice, renovating the lobby, bathrooms and other guest areas, and buying a new Zamboni. A community room is rented out for special occasions.
The ice serves recreational skating, beginner lessons, competitive U.S. Figure Skating programs, compulsory teams and youth hockey teams for ages 6 to 18. Programs include Learn to Skate, TimBits, youth hockey with the WHA, adult hockey leagues, figure skating and special events. On February 18, 2022, the Westland Wings played the Detroit Red Wings Alumni here at Hockey Night in Westland.
