A 1970s tennis club turned two-sheet rink
Suburban Ice Farmington Hills was not built for hockey: the building went up as a tennis club in the 1970s and was later turned into an ice arena. Suburban Sports Group of Farmington Hills owns and runs it today.
Inside are two NHL-regulation sheets, each 200 by 85 feet, served by eight private dressing rooms and two officials' rooms. Spectators watch from heated viewing areas that carry the full sound of the game, and players also get a hockey shooting room and the Mike Humitz Video Room.
The arena is home to HB Hockey Club Detroit, which counts national team players among its alumni. It held a Megan Keller Day celebration that also honored fellow HB alum and Olympic gold medalist Kirsten Simms, with commemorative signed photos for the first 750 guests. Adult leagues, a Breakfast Club and a Girls High School Showdown fill much of the rest of the calendar.
