Opened as the Onyx in 1999
Suburban Ice Rochester opened in 1999 as the Onyx, a three-sheet arena that Suburban managed on behalf of private interests from the day the doors opened. In 2016 the building joined Suburban's corporate family of rinks outright.
The Rochester Hockey Club, established in 1999, calls the building home. It is the third largest association in Michigan, with more than 700 players and 40 teams at the youth level, and it runs the largest beginning hockey program for ages 4 to 12, which feeds one of the only true in-house house leagues in the district. The club's travel arm, the Rochester Rattlers, fields A and AA teams from Mite through Midget in the Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League, the District 3 Tournament and MAHA play, and the Vipers compete at the B/Tier 3 level.
Around the club's ice time, the three sheets carry public skating, Learn to Skate, figure skating, sticks-and-pucks and drop-in hockey sessions.
