Built in 1971 with one rink under a roof and one outdoors
John Lindell Ice Arena opened in 1971 with one indoor rink and one outdoor rink. The second sheet was enclosed in 1995 as part of a $3.5 million renovation, which gave the building the two NHL-sized rinks it has today. It is named for John Lindell, who served as Royal Oak's director of parks and recreation for 16 years.
The Royal Oak Hockey Club and the New Edge Figure Skating Club are based here, and three high school teams call the rink home: the M1 Griffins, Brother Rice and Bishop Foley. Suburban Sports Group runs the arena, and its Goal Post shop handles equipment repairs such as re-palming gloves and replacing eyelets.
Spring brings the Royal Oak Ice Show. More than 100 skaters took part in the last one, and the 47th annual show is set for May 1-2, 2027.
