Hazel Park's former city rink, Viking Ice Arena

Hazel Park Ice Arena on Woodward Heights Boulevard was first opened by the City of Hazel Park in 1999 as Viking Ice Arena. It has one NHL-size rink and one Olympic-size rink operating year-round, along with a gym and a concessions area.

The city eventually decided to sell. "The ice arena has always been a financial drain on the city of Hazel Park," an official said in 2023. After a first offer was rejected, a follow-up offer of $2.9 million from Black Bear Sports Group was unanimously approved by the Hazel Park City Council and the General Building Authority. Black Bear, founded in 2015 by CEO Murry Gunty, is the largest owner-operator of ice rinks in the U.S.

Under its new owner the arena is home to the Little Caesars Hockey Club and International Stars Youth Hockey, as well as various high school hockey clubs.
