The community rink inside Rogers Place
Downtown Community Arena occupies the northeast corner of Rogers Place in Edmonton. It has a single NHL-size sheet, 200 by 85 feet, yet its public programming was set up to equal or exceed that of the City's twin and quad arena complexes. In 2015, at Glen Sather's banner-raising, the Katz Family, in partnership with the City of Edmonton, announced a CA$1 million contribution to support new programs at the arena.
The arena was planned as the home rink for the MacEwan Griffins men's and women's hockey teams, and MacEwan University paid for enhancements its teams needed, including locker rooms and extra spectator seating. It was also designed as practice ice that the Edmonton Oilers, the Oil Kings and visiting teams would rent during their seasons, and a pedestrian walkway inside Rogers Place overlooks the community sheet, so fans can watch those practices from above. Safety netting protects the viewing area.
The official opening was a Sunday afternoon with free skating, a DJ and a juggler. Before the public skate, 15-year-old figure skater Eric Liu and two-time Canadian national champion Kaetlyn Osmond performed for the crowd.

Admission
The City of Edmonton arenas page and the Downtown September 2026 schedule list no public skating price and do not say public skating is free. Member/admission skating and shinny need admission for non-members.
The City’s September 2026 Downtown Community Arena schedule says skate rentals are free during the listed drop-in public-skate sessions. Selection of skates and helmets is first come, first served.
Use the City’s public-skating schedule to choose a dated session and ice sheet. Member/admission skating and shinny use online registration; check in at the front counter after registering.
During public skate, children under eight must be accompanied on the ice and actively supervised by a responsible person aged 13 or older. Helmets are strongly recommended.
