Named for George S. Hughes in 2008
George S. Hughes Southside Arena is a City of Edmonton arena in Rollie Miles Athletic Field District Park, which it shares with tennis courts, a 400-metre synthetic running track and several sports fields. The ice is 185 feet by 85 feet, the stands hold 1,100 spectators, and there are four dressing rooms.
In 2008 the City of Edmonton named the arena after George Hughes, whose service to hockey as a player, coach, manager, referee, executive and builder started in 1938. As a City of Edmonton Commissioner he was instrumental in the building of eight new arenas in 1973 and in the development of Northlands Coliseum in 1974.
The building's future has been under review since the City's 2009-2019 Arena Capital Development Strategy identified six aging arenas for closure or repurposing, but the City's public-skate schedule for the fall of 2026 still lists George S. Hughes sessions.
