An open-air rink at more than 1,800 metres, on artificial ice since 1974 and rebuilt in 2013
Public skating at Patinoire d'Alpe d'Huez: the next 7 days
Currently out of season Open daily 14:30-18:30 from 19 to 31 October 2026, then daily from 5 December 2026 to 25 April 2027 (the rink says the winter hours are to be checked on site). Official schedule update
The rink in Alpe d'Huez grew from a natural ice space created in the 1920s. The first rink was built in 1947 and enlarged in 1949, to 3,000 square metres of ice. In 1974 it became an artificial-ice rink of 60 by 30 metres, the Olympic size of 1,800 square metres.
A 2013 refit cut the rink to 56 by 26 metres, removed the separate curling lane and rebuilt the cold slab, and its refrigeration plant now meets the new environmental standards. The town's councillors chose to keep the rink in the open air, and in 2013 it was described as the highest open-air rink in the world, facing full south at more than 1,800 metres.
Nearly 38,000 people skated here in 2011, with peaks of 1,000 a day during the February holidays. The Alpe d'Huez Patinage Club, created in 1994, offers figure skating and ballet on the ice.
