Amberg's Schanzl ice stadium, opened in 1964 and roofed in 1979

The ice stadium in Amberg opened on 28 November 1964, was roofed in 1979 and was generally renovated in 1991. The ERSC Amberg, founded in 1950, had started an ice hockey section in 1953, and its teams could play in the artificial-ice stadium from November 1964. The hall holds 3,000 spectators, 240 of them seated. In 2024 the hall's old cooling plant was replaced by a more energy-efficient one.

The club climbed to the second-tier Hacker-Pschorr league in 1997. In 1999, as the ERSC's money problems grew, the city demanded the sale of the club-owned hall in return for support, and the speed skating section (founded 1966) and the ice dance section (1977) split off to form the ESC Amberg. A second club, EC 2000 Amberg, founded in 2000, was revived in 2006 and fielded its own teams, and in 2009/10 the city and the hall operator proposed negotiating a merger of the two clubs.
