Opened in 1987, renamed for a mayor in 2013

Construction of the Hans-Schröpf-Arena began in 1985. The first ice-hockey game was played on 4 September 1987, before the official opening, when the newly founded team of the 1. EV Weiden met the second-division club SV Bayreuth in front of 2,300 spectators; the official opening followed on 15 September 1987.

Since 23 September 2013 the stadium has carried the name of the former Weiden mayor Hans Schröpf, in whose term of office it was approved, planned and built. Germany and the Czech Republic played a national-team match here on 11 April 1997, and in February 2013 the women's qualification tournament for the 2014 Winter Olympics was held in Weiden.

Besides the 1. EV Weiden's hockey teams the stadium is used by the club's figure-skating department, the local ice-stock club and hobby hockey teams, and it opens regularly for public skating. A covered open-air ice surface, 10 metres shorter and narrower than the hall, is used in summer by in-line hockey. Extensive building work in summer 2021 added a business club with 80 seats on the west side.
