Floating ice rinks on the Schleifgraben in 1878; artificial ice from 1963 and a second rink from 1966
Currently out of season Public skating on the outdoor Bahn II depends on the weather: the city's page says the season 'startet nicht vor Beginn der Herbstferien' and that the start is announced on its page, which currently shows the rink as closed. Official schedule update
Ice skating on this site goes back to 1878, when the Augsburger EV built floating ice rinks in the so-called Schleifgraben. The stadium reopened as an artificial-ice stadium on 2 November 1963, and the second artificial rink, Bahn 2, opened on 1 January 1966.
Since 1971 the stadium has carried the name of Curt Frenzel, publisher of the Augsburger Allgemeine, long-time chairman of the Augsburger Eislaufverein and a promoter of ice hockey in Augsburg. Bahn 1 is a hall of 60 by 30 metres; the open Bahn 2, the outdoor rink, measures 58 by 28 metres.
The hall is the home ground of the Augsburger Panther ice-hockey club in the DEL, and its conversion into a closed hall was completed in September 2013. The Deutschland Cup was held here from 2015 to 2017. On the outdoor rink, when the weather allows, the public skates alongside the professionals.
