Basel's Eglisee: ice rinks built over the pool basins in 1969
The Eglisee began in 1911 as the Luft- und Sonnenbad Egliseeholz, built after the old bathing house on the Riehenteich was torn down for the Badischer Bahnhof, and in 1930-31 it was converted into a garden pool. To lengthen the annual operating season, two artificial ice rinks were inaugurated in 1969. Every winter one is built over each of the two swimming basins, one for skaters and one for hockey players, and the professional rink can host hockey tournaments. The association Kunschti Eglisee runs them.
The ammonia ice plant built in 1969 lost its operating permit at the end of 2014, because new stricter environmental rules could not be met in the groundwater protection zone. To avoid rebuilding the ice every year over the swimming basins, the plan was to move the ice of the swimmers' basin onto the summer sunbathing lawn, with a pipe grid under the turf. A balloon hall over the 50-metre pool went into operation on 2 October 2017. Today the rink offers a large and a small field, and on some evenings the ice turns into a disco.
