Rheinfelden's rink of 1975, a citizens' initiative
Rheinfelden's artificial ice rink replaced a natural-ice rink on the Turnhallenplatz, which could not be used on a single day in the warm winter of 1973/74. The population approved a planning credit for it on 18 December 1970, the municipal assemblies granted a credit of 1.4 million francs in summer 1973 for a project estimated at 2.42 million, and building began on 10 February 1975.
After eight months of construction the rink was handed over on 11 October 1975, and on 18 and 19 October the 74th artificial ice rink of Switzerland was opened with a festival. A team from the town hall played one from the Kunsti, then came the senior teams of the EHC Basel and the HC Davos, and Zürich Crystal, the reigning world champions, played curling.
The history describes the building of the rink as a remarkable citizens' initiative. Today the winter offer is two ice fields, a large roofed one that works in bad weather and a small open one.
