Roofed in 2004 by club members
Buchloe's ice sport goes back to a meeting of local ice-sport fans on 9 November 1961 that founded the Eissportverein Buchloe. A natural-ice stadium on the Eschenlohstraße opened on 22 December 1963, and in 1976 the town council decided on an artificial-ice stadium; ground was broken on 13 August 1977 and the opening game was played on 6 January 1978.
The stadium was extended in 1988 and fully roofed from March 2004: building firms and club members put a roof over the rink, with over 5,000 volunteer working hours, and the roof carries a photovoltaic installation of 1,330 modules with an output of 219 kWp. The roofed stadium was officially opened on 9 October 2004.
Since 7 December 2014 it has been called the Sparkassenarena Buchloe after its sponsor, the Kreis- und Stadtsparkasse Kaufbeuren. It is a covered and completely enclosed ice hall for 1,500 people, 50 of them seated, and home of the ESV Buchloe Pirates.
