Eisbahn Gais: from the Atzgraswiese in 1989 to the Roter Platz, a club, a cafe and a hockey team
Currently out of season The Eisbahn Gais, a natural-ice rink on the Sportplatz Gaiserau, shows 'Eisbahn geschlossen' on its opening-hours page. The rink is open whenever the weather suits; the printed hours (Wednesday 13:30-17:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00-17:00, 19 December to 3 January 10:00-17:00 and 30 January to 1 February 2027 13:00-17:00) apply mainly to the rink cafe and the skate hire. No sessions are listed here. Checked 11 October 2026. Official schedule update
The first Eisbahn Gais was laid out on the Atzgraswiese, where ice master Martin Kradolfer and helpers stamped down snow and flooded it, building the ice in about a week. Later the rink moved to the Roter Platz, and the first boards, made by Franz Neuländer, arrived, with ice now built on a fleece in three nights.
In the 2011-12 season the Verein Eisbahn Gais and the HC Gais were founded, with a training camp in Flims and a hockey tournament of 52 participants. In 2012-13 the Roter Platz was renovated with permanent boards and opened by European champion Sarah Meier.
Further seasons brought a new rink cafe, equipment for curling-style Eisstockschiessen, the first Gaiser Eisstockschiess-Meisterschaft and an Eisdisco, and a rebuilt Haus Hohl with a new equipment room, toilets and changing room.
