The Eissportzentrum Herzogenried opened in 1981 at the Neuer Meßplatz as Mannheim's ice sports performance centre. It has two covered ice surfaces of 30 by 60 metres that can be used separately or joined into one circuit, which made room for a 220-metre speed-skating track and a 111.12-metre short-track course.
The hall burned down completely in 1988, and training resumed in 1991 after the rebuild. A roof renovation lasting several years followed. The halls are called the Helmut-Klaes-Halle and the Eugen-Romminger-Halle.
The state performance centre for ice sports is based here, training figure skating, ice stock sport, curling, junior and senior ice hockey and short track. The Mannheimer ERC concentrated on figure skating after the opening and keeps its office in the building alongside the Eissportverband Baden-Württemberg.
