Friends at a Numansdorp bar founded Nooitgedagt in 1927, and a spelling change won it free skates
Currently out of season This is a natural-ice rink: the club's home page says it comes to life only when the temperature drops below zero. When there is ice it is open the hours on the contact page. Official schedule update
IJsvereniging Nooitgedagt has existed since 19 December 1927, when friends at the bar of a café in Middelsluis decided to found an ice club. The fee was set at one guilder per family per year. They had never thought an ice club would come to Middelsluis, so they called it Nooitgedacht Middelsluis; when the famous skate factory in IJlst turned out to be Nooitgedagt with a g, the club changed its spelling, and from then until the factory stopped making skates in 1965 a pair arrived from IJlst every year.
By 1928 the club had about 200 members. In 1935 the race track moved towards the village, lighting was laid and a koek-en-zopie tent sold aniseed milk, punch and oliebollen. The war years and the flood of 1953 left little room for skating, and the club only got back on its feet in the winter of 1955-56.
After the winter of 1962-63, when the inner harbour was busy and the lights burned in the evening, the members agreed that Nooitgedagt must have a rink of its own.
