Osaka's winter ice rink built over a 50 metre pool
Every winter the 50 metre pool and the diving pool of the Asue Osaka Pool in Yahataya Park become a large rink of 30 by 60 metres, big enough for figure skating, ice hockey and speed skating competitions. The operator says it aims for ice that is neither too hard nor too soft, so the edges bite differently.
The rink is made in stages. The pool floor is raised about 30 centimetres above the pool deck, 750 pipes carrying antifreeze are laid on it, and water is sprayed on until the ice is thick enough to paint and mark with hockey lines. The finished ice is about 9 to 10 centimetres thick.
Gloves are compulsory, helmets are lent for toddlers and beginners, and the winter season runs from late November to mid-April.
