A column-free glulam ice hall, opened in 1981

The Eissporthalle Am Sandbach in Ratingen-West opened on March 26, 1981, after groundbreaking in June 1979 and a little under two years of construction. Contemporary billing called it Europe's most modern ice hall, and it was built for 13.2 million Deutsche Mark without a single interior column.

A three-hinge glulam frame carries the roof, spanning almost 78 metres with the ridge 16.1 metres above the ice, and the timber beams are visible from inside. The ice measures 30 by 60 metres. The stands were extended for the 1992/93 season to hold almost 3,800 spectators, and the refrigeration plant was converted to ammonia in 1998. The Ratinger Löwen, who reached Germany's top hockey league in the early 1990s, were among the first users; after they left in 1997 the Ratinger Ice Aliens became the resident club.

The beams are also the hall's weak point. Years of moisture left the roof shoes outside the hall rotten in 2012, and in August 2026 a local report said cracks in the timber meant another season without ice, with 2026/27 written off while experts inspect and repair them.
