Uncovered artificial-ice rink from 2000 whose booster club tore out the sand floor and ran it until 2021

The Eisstadion Stefanshöhe in Wangen is an uncovered artificial-ice rink that dates from 2000. The Förderverein Kunsteisstadion Stefanshöhe, founded in 2005, operated it and promoted young players in ice hockey and figure skating. In 2007 the Förderverein tore out the original quartz-sand floor, which was useless for inline skating and made building the ice harder. Sun sails were hung over the stadium in 2014 to help the ice hold, and the rink lies in a landscape protection area.
In March 2013 the administration proposed new pipework and a new concrete surface that would allow year-round use, ice in winter and inliners in summer. By the 2014 season, hobby teams had the ice nearly booked out in the afternoons and evenings, and schools from across the region used it in the mornings. The ice disco at times drew more than 300 young people.
The council and town refused a roof over the ice, and in 2021 the Förderverein's members cancelled their lease, after which the town found Kohler Solar to operate the rink. The MTG Wangen's ice and roller sport department had hockey and figure-skating groups; in 2019 its members turned it from a competition into a leisure-sport department, with its focus on year-round use of the stadium.
