1,800 square metres of ice under a renewed roof
The Eisstadion Wernau has an ice surface of 1,800 square metres inside a hall whose interior covers 3,200 square metres plus side rooms. The ice is cooled with 2.9 tonnes of ammonia circulating through 22 kilometres of cooling coils, working on a system similar to underfloor heating but in reverse.
The hall is converted twice a year. For winter the boards are set and nets hung, and the water is applied in layers by fire hose over several days and nights.
In 2007 the complete roof covering was renovated, 4,050 square metres in all. The earlier fibre-cement roof had no thermal insulation, and the new metal roof was built from insulated sandwich panels. On the south side 1,258 square metres of photovoltaic panels with 960 modules were planned.
Between public runs the ice is rented to hobby hockey teams, and the TV Unterboihingen trains figure skaters in the stadium. The rink was awarded the title “Sozial Engagiert” in 2010.
