A 400 m artificial-ice oval opened on 2 January 1973, with a 30 by 60 metre Funrink on its centre field
De Uithof's 400-metre artificial-ice oval opened officially on 2 January 1973, about two years after the first pile was driven on 17 December 1970. At first the only shelter from the weather was the rising grandstand around the track; a roof built in 1989 made the oval semi-covered. The skating rink was the first activity of a complex that now describes itself as the largest covered sports centre in the Netherlands.
On the centre field of the oval lies a covered 30 by 60 metre Funrink, and a separate ice hockey rink is the base of the club Hijs. The complex is the home of Hijs Hokij Den Haag and of the HardrijVereniging Den Haag-Westland, which skates long track and short track. Champions including Ben van den Burg, Bart Veldkamp, Jac Orie and Kjeld Nuis have ridden laps on the oval.
In 2000 a ski slope was built and the centre grew into a multi-activity sports complex. A major fire in 2004 destroyed the ice hockey hall, the catering area and the fitness rooms, and the hall was demolished and rebuilt. De Uithof counted 1,582,665 visitors in 2024, fifth place in the Dutch day-attraction top 50.
