Opened in 1968, rebuilt as the Helios Arena in 2009
The Kunsteisbahn Villingen-Schwenningen GmbH was founded in May 1968 and opened its ice stadium on 14 December 1968, with one ice surface and a curling and Eisschießen lane. The rink was roofed in 1976, and a second hall and the state performance centre for curling followed in the early 1980s.
A new roof and the completed Helios Arena came in 2009, and the first sold-out ice hockey game in the new hall followed in April 2009. In 2020 the ice surface was narrowed, which the arena says made it the first ice stadium in Germany with an NHL-size rink. Between April and September 2026 the 60-year-old concrete slab was renovated.
The Wild Wings of the SERC call the arena home: the Schwenninger skaters date back to 1904, when citizens formed a Schwimm- und Eisclub, and have played as the Wild Wings since 1994. The arena lists official ice hockey capacity of 6,200 and hosts concerts and comedy shows too.
