A 1975 city rink with a 185-by-85-foot sheet, named for the banker who left his estate to St. Joseph
Bode Ice Arena opened in 1975, a 30,000-square-foot city building around a 185-by-85-foot sheet of ice. It carries the name of George Bode Jr., a St. Joseph banker who, on his death in May 1955, left his entire estate to the citizens of St. Joseph for recreation. The city received more than three million dollars, and the arena is one of the results.
The bleachers seat 500. The Greater St. Joseph Youth Hockey Association holds all of its practices here, and its high school team plays in the Kansas City Metro Hockey Association. The St. Joseph Figure Skating Club, a competitive club, skates early-evening freestyle sessions on weekdays, hosts the Pony Express Figure Skating Championships at the arena every September and puts on an ice show each spring.
The outdoor Bode Sports Complex opened in June 1999, attached to the west end of the arena building. Games and practices on the ice stream live through LiveBarn, and broomball is played during private ice sessions.
